UPSC OPTIONALS are the driving force for the best scores in the mains. From 2013 onwards for all the toppers, scores of options have dragged up them to the top position.

 UPSC provides a list of optional subjects. Candidates have to choose one option for the CS Mains exam. The optional subject has two papers and each paper accounts for 250 marks. Aspirants may choose from the list of optional subjects that also includes literature subjects (English and Indian languages).
The papers for the examination will be subjective in nature. Each paper will be of 3 hours duration. The question papers, other than the literature of language papers will be set in Hindi and English only.
